May 16th, 2011

For all you moms with more stomach bug experience... at what point do you take a toddler in that's lethargic not keeping anything down? I KNOW it's a virus and not appendicitis or anything since her sis had it first but I'm worried that she's getting dehydrated since she keeps saying she's thirsty. It's only been about 5 hours so far.

    • Lynnette Camp Which child? It all depends on age.

    • Tonya Kingsley Ziese Call in first, they may tell you that as long as she is keeping down liquids w/o a fever, there isn't much you can do. Maybe those pedialite popsicles...

    • Samantha Crawford Crane Asher had the stomach flu for almost 5 days and lost about 4 pounds (which is a lot for him). He didn't eat hardly anything and didn't drink much at all. Our pedi wasn't concerned, and actually said don't give him anything at all to drink or eat for the first 12 hours to give his stomach a rest. It's hard when they are little! I hope she feels better soon!!

    • Angi Nicholas once she is keeping things down, you might want to try propel.. It has always been more gentle on Chad's tummy, tastes better too. ;)

    • Jennifer Langridge Wojcik have you called your doctor? I usually call after a day if they are lethargic and keeping nothing down just to check and see what they recommend. Being lethargic is a not the best sign.

    • Amanda 'Davidson' Himes Yes, call. If she isn't keeping anything down, she may need fluids. But if EVER in doubt, call.
      16 May at 19:55 ·
    • Carrie Hilson I wouldn't wait too long.
      16 May at 19:55 ·
    • Lynnette Camp I always call in, but have also been given lots of specific things to look for based on age and stuff.

    • Gail Hedge Keefe I would call. Dehydration can come up on kids really quickly.

Paige has been vomiting this afternoon/evening... hoping its just a 24hour thing (less would be nice) .. Paige is asleep on the couch, and has been since about 7:30..

    • Lisa Norris Emerson Is she peeing? If they stop urinating they are dehydrated. My Dr. always asks about that...I think it's hard to tell how much fluid actually stay in when they are so cik. Prayers for her to get better and for the reat of you to steer clear of it:)
      17 May at 11:34 ·
    • Melissa Zielinski Zollner Can you give her some expressed milk in a tablespoon? That will help her be as hydrated as possible... thank goodness for booby magic at times like this! :( so sad for you all...

    • Molly J. Orman You know, I have been keeping her from nursing since I'm trying REALLY hard to avoid any chance of baby getting the germs if we can help it but I never thought to give her expressed milk! So far they're doing a little better with keeping fluids down as of this evening but we'll see how tonight goes.
